Cotton County, Oklahoma – August 19, 2013

An elderly man that was involved in a Cotton County accident on Interstate 44 died of his injuries a few days later according to state police.

Clarence Eugene Bishop, 80, was a passenger in a vehicle that rear-ended a pickup truck according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Officials identified the driver of Mr. Bishop’s vehicle as Linda Baxter, who was in fair condition at an area hospital.

Mr. Bishop died at 10:20 p.m. on August 21 at United Regional Medical Center. In the accident the car he was in went off the road and hit a center barrier before hitting a pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup was not identified and it is not known if they were injured.

According to the National Safety Council, the rate of traffic deaths rose 4 percent in 2012 to 1.23 per 100 million. The study attributed the increase, in part, to a mild winter and improved economic conditions.

UPDATE: Officials identified the driver of the pickup as Robert Allen Hughes Jr., 31. it is not known if he was injured.
