According to police in Kanawha County, a trucker was under the influence when his coal truck struck another coal truck on Thursday afternoon.

Troopers with the West Virginia State Police report that Raleigh County resident Joseph Webb was operating a coal truck along Cabin Creek Road, just off Interstate 64 (Interstate 77) in the Dry Branch area. Around 3:25 p.m., Mr. Webb drifted into the other lane and struck a second coal truck.

Paramedics transported both truckers to a nearby hospital for treatment. Mr. Webb later admitted to investigators that he was stoned on drugs at the time of the crash.

He is under suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, driving left of center and reckless driving.

The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that driver error was the primary cause in 90 percent of major traffic crashes.

Newport News, Virginia — September 30, 2011

Police in Newport News responded Friday morning to an injury accident with entrapment.

According to the Newport News Police Department, the unidentified driver of a white pickup truck was traveling along U.S. Route 60 (Warwick Boulevard) around 7:10 a.m. As the pickup approached Copeland Drive, near Mariners Museum Park, a red Volkswagen attempted to make a left-hand turn from Copeland Drive to Warwick Bouelvard and crossed into the path of the pickup.

The pickup’s driver was unable to avoid a collision, and struck the Volkswagen on the driver’s side in T-bone fashion. Firefighters used hydraulic extrication tools to free the Volkswagen’s driver.

Paramedics transported the driver of the Volkswagen to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Investigators indicated that the pickup had the right of way. The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that driver error was the primary cause in 90 percent of major traffic crashes.

Beckley, West Virginia — April 3, 2011

At least one man has been confirmed dead in a rafting accident on the New River near Beckley on Sunday.

The National Park Service reports that five rafters were on board a jon boat, 14 feet in length, around 5 p.m. on Sunday when the craft overturned. Two of the men, Lester resident Daniel Malone and Sandstone resident Jeff Acord successfully swam to shore.

The current carried away three others in the boat, however. Shortly before noon on Monday, April 4, the body of Lester resident Paul Malone, 23, was recovered, roughly 1,000 feet downriver from the accident. The whereabouts and condition of Lester resident Dean Halsey and Richmond, Virginia resident Sam Acord remain unknown.

Officials say none of the men on board was wearing a life preserver at the time of the accident.

Beckley, West Virginia — September 21, 2010

A Monday morning single-vehicle accident on Route 16, outside of Mount Hope in Fayette County, resulted in the death of one man. According to Oak Hill State Police, at about 9 a.m., Marshall Spinks Jr., 45, of White Sulphur Springs, wrecked the logging truck he was driving in an area known as “dead man’s curve.”

As they reconstructed the scene, police believed that Mr. Spinks entered into the sharp curve and lost control of his truck. The vehicle veered off the roadside and fell down a 40-foot bank.

The truck likely rolled, damaging the truck’s frame and crushing the roof. Mr. Spinks was apparently not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Mr. Spinks was pronounced dead at the scene.

Route 16 remained shut down through mid-afternoon while Evergreen Environmental Management Inc. cleaned up the scene.
