Hemphill County, Texas – December 16, 2012

A resident of Canadian was killed Monday and a woman was seriously injured in a crash approximately eight miles south of Canadian on U.S. Route 83.

The accident happened at 1:40 p.m. at the intersection with Texas State Route 33 when a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban failed to yield for a 2001 Mack semi driven by 48-year-old Jerry Kelly. The Texas Department of Public Safety said that Mr. Kelly’s semi then hit another semi that was parked on the shoulder.

Mr. Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said that 75-year-old John Dale Ramp and 73-year-old Alouise Southers Ramp were hospitalized as passengers in the SUV. The driver of the second semi, 29-year-old Ada, Oklahoma resident Christopher Chance Walker, was also hospitalized.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reports that trucking accidents may be rising across the United States. There were 3,686 people killed and 80,000 injured in truck crashes in 2010, and the numbers rose higher the following year.
