Brownsville, Texas — October 9, 2013

A motorcycle rider was seriously injured in Brownsville on Wednesday when police said the driver of a car failed to yield.

The accident occurred on Old Port Isabel Road at Cesar Lane according to the Brownsville Police Department at 9:30 a.m. The female driver of a light colored sedan pulled onto Old Port Isabel Road and was hit by the motorcycle, seriously injuring the rider.

The rider was eventually taken to a San Antonio hospital for treatment. No names were released.

Less than half of motorcycle accidents in the state of Texas included riders that were wearing helmets in 2012 according to the Texas Department of Transportation. Only 4,875 out of 10,391 motorcycle accident had confirmed victims that were wearing helmets.

UPDATE: Officials identified the victim as 59-year-old Hector Ignacio Reyna of Mission, who later died of his injuries in a San Antonio hospital.
