An accident on the Guadalupe River bridge for U.S. Route 77 Monday night occurred because of a wrong-way driver according to police.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said that 21-year-old Jonathon Stithem was driving a black Mazda northbound when he crossed into oncoming traffic for unknown reasons. His Mazda hit a Dodge Challenger, injuring an unidentified woman and her two children.

The woman and her children were taken to DeTar Hospital Navarro in unknown condition. Mr. Stithem died at the scene.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
