Odessa, Texas — August 27, 2013

A Tuesday accident in Odessa at the intersection of Castle Road and 38th Street killed  man at approximately 11:30 p.m. according to police.

Larry Scott Owens, 47, of Odessa was allegedly speeding when he went off of the roadway and hit a fence. The Odessa Police Department said that Mr. Owens was ejected from his vehicle in the accident, but they did not know if any other vehicles were involved.

Mr. Owens was declared dead at the scene.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, trees are the most common fixed object struck. Fifty percent of deaths in fixed object crashes in 2010 involved a vehicle striking a tree. Utility poles and traffic barriers were the next most common objects struck, accounting for 14 and 8 percent of deaths, respectively.
