A Saturday evening accident in Edinburg killed a woman on Alberta Road near Cesar Chavez Road according to police.

A car driven by 21-year-old Johnathan Sanchez was westbound on Alberta at 9 p.m. when he failed to stop at a stop sign according to the Edinburg Police Department. Mr. Sanchez struck a Pontiac carrying two women, killing 54-year-old driver Maria Isabel Garcia.

Ms. Garcia’s cousin in the passenger seat was taken to McAllen Medical Center in critical condition. Mr. Sanchez was charged with manslaughter.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2008 more than 2.3 million reported intersection-related crashes, resulted in more than 7,770 fatalities and approximately 733,000 injuries.
