Grand Prairie, Texas — January 27, 2013

A 2004 Dodge Stratus was involved in a major accident on westbound Interstate 30 at 1:50 p.m. Sunday that killed Maria Gonzalez-Rufugio, 12, and Dianna Gonzalez-Refugio, 13. The Grand Prairie Police Department stated that Juan Gonzalez was driving the Stratus when it stalled in the left lane near Texas State Route 161.

Mr. Gonzalez got out to wave away traffic while his wife, Maria Vasquez, stayed in the car with four children. An unidentified man from North Richland Hills in a Ford F-150 pickup truck struck the car from behind.

The younger Maria died at the scene, while Dianna died at Cook Children’s Medical Center. The other two unidentified children, ages 10 and 6, were also taken to the same hospital. The mother suffered minor injuries.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding vehicles contribute to 93 fatal traffic accidents every day.

Update: A third child, Jesus Gonzalez, 6, tied of his injuries on Monday, January 28. Maria de Jesus Gonzalez, 10, was listed as being in critical condition at Cook Children’s Medical Center.
