Bastrop County, Texas – January 24, 2013
Gregory Robinson, 22, was killed early Thursday morning in a crash with a semi on Texas State Route 95 north of Elgin near Roemer Road. The Texas Department of Public Safety stated that Mr. Robinson was driving southbound in a Dodge Stratus when he went onto the shoulder to pass a semi.
As he passed the semi he lost control, over-corrected, and struck a northbound semi head-on. The impact knocked his vehicle into the southbound lanes, where the original semi swerved to avoid the crash and rolled onto its side.
Mr. Robinson died at the scene after his vehicle caught fire. It is not known if either semi driver was injured.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
