Pecos, Texas — December 28, 2012

The Texas Department of Public Safety stated that a man and a woman were killed Friday in a crash on U.S. route 285 at 1:30 p.m. Alvin Bruce Gilliam, 77, was driving a Cadillac northbound when a 2001 Dodge Ram was attempting to pass a vehicle while southbound.

Both vehicles swerved to miss each other, but collided in a bar ditch on the east side of the road. Mr. Gilliam and his wife, Joann Brockman Gilliam, 72, died at the scene.

The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that driver error was the primary cause in 90 percent of major traffic crashes.
