Houston, Texas — October 27, 2012
An unidentified 18-year-old male was driving a black GMC Sierra pickup and was racing another vehicle on the Interstate 10 Frontage Road at Uvalde Road Friday night when he ran a red light and struck a black Nissan Titan. The Houston Police Department stated that the Sierra then hit a light pole, ejecting several passengers.
An unidentified 19-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from the Sierra. The driver suffered major injuries, but is expected to survive. It was unclear how many other passengers were injured.
In 2010, speeding was a factor in 32 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Speeding has been a factor in about one-third of crash deaths since 2001.
