Abilene, Texas — August 16, 2012

A motorcycle accident Thursday morning at 12:40 a.m. killed Justin Burleson, 30, according to the Abilene Police Department. Mr. Burleson was driving southbound in the northbound lane of U.S. Route 83 near Farm-to-Market Road 3034 when his Harley-Davidson sportster collided head-on with a cattle truck driven by Keenan Cooley, 30.

Mr. Burleson was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. he was declared dead at the scene.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycles are more likely to be involved in a fatal collision with a fixed object than are other vehicles. In 2008, 25 percent of the motorcycles involved in fatal crashes collided with fixed objects, compared to 19 percent for passenger cars, 14 percent for light trucks, and 4 percent for large trucks.
