An unidentified worker with the city of Amarillo was injured was killed Thursday when a tire he was inflating exploded according to the Amarillo Police Department. The tire exploded and the metal ring struck him in the head and chest at the central services garage on 23rd Street.

The accident happened at 10:20 a.m. and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was believed to have been injured in the explosion.

Update: Officials identified the deceased as Gary Witt, 57, or Amarillo

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 200 people were killed in the workplace from fires and explosions in 1995 and more than 5,000 were injured.
