San Antonio, Texas — July 9, 2012

Police say a child was killed Monday during a crash involving a semi in the San Antonio area.

According to officers with the San Antonio Police Department, 43-year-old Ramon Justo Alvarado Jr. was behind the wheel of a sport-utility vehicle as it traveled along U.S. Route 281. As Mr. Alvarado approached Brook Hollow Boulevard, around 10:10 a.m., he rear-ended a stopped semi, operated by 48-year-old Gustavo Rissopatron.

Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save 7-year-old passenger Justin Kalak. His sister, 5-year-old Julianne Kalak, was taken to University Hospital for treatment. Mr. Alvarado also suffered injuries and was taken to University Hospital by helicopter.

Mr. Rissopatron escaped unhurt. His vehicle reportedly stopped due to mechanical failure. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
