San Patricio County, Texas — July 18, 2012

Police say a female motorist was killed and her passenger injured Wednesday during a rollover crash near Mathis.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, San Antonio resident Ashley Marie-Nicole Rendon, 20, was behind the wheel of a 1996 Lincoln Town Car sedan as it traveled southbound along Interstate 37. As Ms. Rendon approached County Road 34 (Farm to Market Road 630), around 2:45 a.m., she veered onto the left shoulder.

Investigators say Ms. Rendon turned sharply back to the right, crashed into a nearby depression where the Town Car flipped. Ms. Rendon was ejected from the wreckage, suffering fatal injuries, and died at the scene.

Paramedics transported her passenger, 25-year-old San Antonio resident Nakezia Shanae Hebert, to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial for treatment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009.
