The Galveston Police Department confirmed the death of Roel Ramos on Monday in a moped accident. Mr. Ramos had borrowed the moped from a restaurant worker and had taken it on a brief ride around the block when he wrecked in the 2300 block of 31st Street.

Mr. Ramos was declared dead of a head injury at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday at University of Texas Medical Branch. No further details about the accident were available at this time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
