Police say a bicyclist was hospitalized Friday after being hit by a vehicle in the Salem area.

According to officers with the Salem Police Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a Hummer sport-utility vehicle as it traveled south along Airport Road. As the SUV approached Mission Street, around 12:55 p.m., it made contact with a bicycle.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the rider, 26-year-old Dustin Embom, to Salem Hospital for treatment. The Hummer’s driver has not been identified by name.

Authorities say Mr. Embom was riding in a circle moments before being hit. People for Bikes is dedicated to preserving the future of safe biking. By collecting 1 million names of support, the organization intends to rally policymakers and the media in favor of bicycling.

UPDATE: The Hummer’s driver has been identified as 52-year-old Salem resident Janiel Rae-Ryan.
