Clackamas County, Oregon — August 10, 2013

Police say a wrong-way driver was killed Saturday during an accident near Canby.

According to troopers with the Oregon State Police, 57-year-old Hubbard resident Steve A. Koutny was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled south along Oregon 99E. Around 8:05 p.m., Mr. Koutny observed a northbound 2002 Subaru Legacy hatchback veer into oncoming traffic.

Investigators say Mr. Koutny was unable to avoid a collision with the Legacy, driven by 21-year-old Layne Jason Ifert, who also struck 54-year-old Woodinville, Washington resident Merrill Wayne Ralsten Jr.

Paramedics responded to the scene and airlifted Mr. Ifert to Oregon Health & Science University, but doctors were unable to save him. Mr. Koutny, meanwhile, was taken to Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center for treatment.

Ralsten escaped unhurt. According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, 35,031 travelers were injured in 23,887 crashes with injury occurred in Oregon in 2011.
