Portland, Oregon — July 25, 2012

Emily Hamilton, 19, was seriously injured on Wednesday in an accident between a Chevrolet Trailblazer and a second SUV on Oregon State Route 99W. Ms. Hamilton was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her mother, Elizabeth.

The Hamiltons were crossing the highway when they were sideswiped by the Trailblazer driven by Manuel Mawleon, 18. Both Hamiltons were injured in the accident. Officials believe that Mr. Mawleon had been speeding during the crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.
