Portland, Oregon — July 4, 2012
The Portland Police Department responded to an accident between a TriMet bus and an SUV on Wedensday at the intersection of Multnomah Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The bus had the green light at the intersection, but struck a Toyota Highlander that blew through the red light.
The SUV flipped onto its side as a result of the collision. Four people in the Highlander were injured and taken to hospitals. No one on the bus was seriously injured.
The American Bus Association reports that more than half of tour bus fatalities from 1999 to 2009 involved carriers operating against the law or with a history of safety violations.
