A resident of Alva was killed Wednesday night in an accident on U.S. Route 64 at County Road 370 according to state police.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said that 24-year-old Seth Farris was driving a 2002 Ford Escape on U.S. 64 when he was hit by a northbound Ford F-250 pickup driven by 39-year-old Sergio Martinez of Benton, Arkansas. Mr. Martinez allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection.

Mr. Farris had to be extracted from the SUV and died at Share Medical Center in Alva. Mr. Martinez suffered head and arm injuries and was treated before being released.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
