State police confirmed that at least one person was killed Monday afternoon in an accident on Interstate 44 near Chickasha.

The accident happened just to the east of the Chickasha Airport at 3:30 p.m. Monday when a semi and a passenger car collided according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. The semi then caught fire, engulfing the entire road and most of the grass off to the roadside.

At least one person was killed but their identity was not released. It is not known if there were any other injuries.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
