Sequoyah County, Oklahoma — August 17, 2013

State police confirmed that two people were killed on Saturday in an accident on westbound Interstate 40 two miles east of Sallisaw.

The accident occurred at 7:20 p.m. according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol when a 2002 GMC Yukon driven by Earnest Poindexter, 59, went off the roadway for unknown reasons. The SUV rolled twice and hit a traffic sign, ejecting Betty Gene Poindexter, 58, and Ira Poindexter, 55.

Both ejected passengers were not wearing seat belts and died at the scene. The driver and two other passengers only had minor injuries.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 80 percent of all rollovers involve no other vehicle besides the one that rolls over.
