A driver from Altus was killed Monday in an accident on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike near Oklahoma City according to state police.

Phillip Prestriedge was driving a car westbound at 3 a.m. Monday when he stopped on the shoulder and started to reverse according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. A semi then rear-ended him.

Mr. Prestriedge was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the semi was not identified.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
