One person was killed Tuesday evening in an accident on U.S. Route 169 at the Bird Creek bridge according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. The accident occurred in the northbound lanes north of 56th Street when Brenda Buntin, 48, swerved to avoid tire debris in the road in her pickup.

A Volkswagen driven by Kimberly Stauffer, 28, of Bixby hit the pickup, when was hit by a second pickup driven by Jenny Harrison, 33, of Broken Arrow. Tristan Stauffer, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene as a passenger in the Volkswagen.

Ms. Buntin and Ms. Stauffer were taken to an area hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
