Pike Township, Ohio – July 4, 2011
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that fatal injuries were sustained by a female teenager involved in a two-vehicle crash on Monday.
They say it happened around 7:15 p.m. as a Chevrolet Cobalt carrying 16-year-old Lauren K. Wright traveled west on State Route 37. The driver was William T. Kokensparger, and as the Cobalt was near Black Gold Road authorities say it crossed the center line and struck an oncoming pickup truck operated by Larry Weaver II, 26. Police are still investigating to determine why the car of Mr. Kokensparger left its lane before the crash.
Medics transported Lauren to Fairfield Medical Center for treatment of her injuries, but she later died. According to reports, neither she nor Mr. Kokensparger wore a safety belt.
Hospitalization was necessary for Mr. Kokensparger and a passenger in the pickup truck—identified as 21-year-old Britni R. Williams.
As of May 18, the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) has joined the National Mobilization for Seat Belt Safety. Over the last decade, the rate of seat belt use in Ohio rose from 65 percent to 84 percent. In their efforts to further reduce injuries preventable by seat belt use, ODPS will be a part of the national Click It or Ticket campaign.
