Onslow County, North Carolina — October 26, 2012

Six motorists, including three children, were hospitalized after a three-vehicle collision near the intersection of U.S. Route 258 and Yopp Road in Jackonsville Friday afternoon.

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, 30-year-old Jessica Demchak of Jacksonville was traveling eastbound in her 2001 Dodge minivan when she crossed the center line and struck the 1993 Ford van driven by 56-year-old Jeffery Wooten of Maple Hill. The impact caused Ms. Demchak to spin and strike a Honda Civic driven by an unidentified motorist.

Ms. Demchak and her three children were flown to Vidant Medical Center with serious injuries.

Mr. Wooten and his passenger, 56-year-old Don Holmes also of Maple Hill, were transported to Onslow Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The Honda driver was not hurt.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, wrong-way drivers are involved in 1.5 percent of all fatal crashes.
