A motorist was hospitalized after crashing her vehicle into a tree off Lake Road Tuesday night.

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, an unidentified 20-year-old female motorist of Emerald Isle was traveling at a high rate of speed in her vehicle around 10:10 p.m. when she lost control in a curve, left the roadway, and struck a traffic sign and a tree.

The motorist was flown to Vidant Medical Center with multiple injuries including a broken arm. Her identity has not yet been released.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, trees are the most common fixed object struck. Fifty percent of deaths in fixed object crashes in 2010 involved a vehicle striking a tree. Utility poles and traffic barriers were the next most common objects struck, accounting for 14 and 8 percent of deaths, respectively.

UPDATE: The motorist has been identified as Aileach Kelly.
