A motorist died after his vehicle was rear-ended by another vehicle on the U.S. Route 64 bypass Sunday night.

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, 50-year-old Charles McGee had pulled off the interstate to repair his daughter Neshoba Gorham’s vehicle which had broken down in the area earlier that day when he was rear-ended by a BMW driven by an unidentified male motorist.

Mr. McGee died at the scene from his injuries. The BMW driver and his unidentified passenger were not hurt.

Charges are pending in this case.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the National Safety Council, more than 2.5 million rear-end collisions are reported every year, making them the most common type of automobile accident.
