Rowan County, North Carolina — August 30, 2012

A motorcyclist died and two other motorists were injured after a two-vehicle collision on Old Beatty Ford Road in Gold Hill Thursday evening.

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, 19-year-old James Michael Marks was traveling in his Honda around 6:10 p.m. when he crossed the center line and collided with the motorcycle driven by 57-year-old Richard Wayne Russell.

Mr. Russell died instantly. Mr. Marks and his girlfriend Holly Morgan were transported to Carolinas Medical Center Northeast with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mr. Marks faces charges of death by motor vehicle.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,290 motorcyclists were killed in 2008.
