Wake County, North Carolina – July 16, 2012

A worker was found dead in the tree he was working in at the home located at 7316 Westworth Drive Monday.

According to the Fuquay-Varina Fire Department, an unidentified white male in his 40s had been hired by the homeowner to remove the tree from the premises. Officials were called to the scene when passers-by noticed the man seemed to be unconscious in the tree.

He was pronounced dead once rescue personnel were able to move him to the ground. It is unclear if the man suffered a medical emergency or died from an injury sustained during the attempted tree removal.

It is not known if the worker was an independent contractor or an employee of a local business.

His identity has not yet been released.

According to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, 4,690 workers were killed on the job in 2010 — more than 90 a week or nearly 13 deaths every day.

UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 44-year-old Johnny B. Blackman.
