Grand Island, New York — July 9, 2012
Police say three travelers died Monday during a collision involving an elderly driver on Grand Island.
Troopers with the New York State Police report that an unidentified motorist was operating a sport-utility vehicle south along Interstate 190. Around 12:40 a.m., the driver observed a white northbound vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the highway.
The SUV’s driver was unable to avoid a collision and hit the car, driven by a male, 87. Investigators say the impact caused both vehicles to catch fire.
Paramedics rushed both drivers to Erie County Medical Center for treatment of medical trauma. Three other subjects reported suffered fatal injuries.
