Brentwood, New York — July 4, 2012
Police say a pedestrian was injured on Independence Day after a incident involving a suspected drunken driver.
According to officers with the Suffolk County Police Department, 26-year-old Central Islip resident Joshua Serrano was on foot along Suffolk Avenue, between near Willoughby Street. Around 2:15 a.m., a 2008 Nissan Altima sedan pulled out of a parking area and struck him, before hitting two parked cars.
Paramedics transported Mr. Serrano to Bay Shore’s Southside Hospital for treatment of lower-body trauma. Officers at the scene detected impairment on the Altima’s driver, Alcides Melgar.
Mr. Melgar was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident and driving while intoxicated. Witnesses have been asked to call (800) 220-8477 or (631) 854-8352 with any additional information.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that a pedestrian dies in a U.S. traffic accident every 110 minutes and one is injured every nine minutes.
