East Patchogue, New York — June 11, 2012
Police say a motorcyclist died Monday during a collision with a sport-utility vehicle in the East Patchogue area.
According to officers with the Suffolk County Police Department, 42-year-old North Babylon resident Elliot B. Smith was operating a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle west along Montauk Highway. As Mr. Smith approached Sills Road, around 9:55 p.m., the bike made contact with a 1998 Ford Explorer SUV, driven by 20-year-old Center Moriches resident Marie Volpe.
Paramedics transported Mr. Smith to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save him. Ms. Volpe sustained lesser injuries.
Witnesses have been asked to call (631) 854-8552 with any additional information. In 2008, motorcyclists accounted for 14 percent of total traffic fatalities, 17 percent of all occupant fatalities, and 4 percent of all occupants injured according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
