Wyandanch, New York — June 23, 2012
Police say a motorcycle struck a delivery truck Saturday in the Wyandanch area, killing the rider.
According to officers with the Suffolk County Police Department, 21-year-old West Babylon resident Michael Garcia was operating a 2001 Mitsubishi delivery truck through the area. As Mr. Garcia approached Patton Avenue and Little East Neck Road, some time before noon, he was hit by a northbound 2005 Honda.
Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save the rider, described only as a Latino male over 20. Witnesses are asked to call (631) 854-8152 with any additional information.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, per vehicle mile traveled in 2007, motorcyclists were about 37 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a motor vehicle traffic crash and nine times more likely to be injured.
