Hauppauge, New York — June 10, 2012

Police say a red-light crash Sunday in the Hauppauge area injured three travelers.

According to officers with the Suffolk County Police Department, 17-year-old Avon, Connecticut resident Todd Slater was behind the wheel of a 1999 Volvo as it traveled through town later Sunday. As Todd approached the corner of Smithtown Bypass (New York State Route 347) and Hauppauge Boulevard (New York State Route 111), investigators say, he failed to heed a red light.

The Volvo made contact with a 2012 Audi heading north and operated by 22-year-old Leonard Olmstead. The impact left Todd pinned inside the wreckage, forcing firefighters to free him with hydraulic extrication tools before he was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Paramedics treated Mr. Olmstead and an unidentified passenger at the scene. Witnesses have been asked to call (631) 854-8452.

In 2009, eight teens ages 16 to 19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.
