Brentwood, New York – July 4, 2012

Police say a motorist was injured Wednesday during a suspected drunken-driving incident near Brentwood.

The Suffolk County Police Department reports that a 2008 Nissan Altima driven by Alcides Melgar was headed east along Suffolk Avenue. As Mr. Melgar approached Fulton Street, around 2:25 a.m., he collided with 23-year-old Central Islip resident Christohper Ocloo, who was driving a 2008 Toyota Corolla.

Paramedics took Mr. Ocloo to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore of undisclosed injuries. Meanwhile, Mr. Melgar was taken into custody on suspicion of leaving an accident scene and driving while intoxicated.

Investigators soon discovered that he had been involved in an earlier incident involving a pedestrian and two parked cars. Those with additional information are asked to call (800) 220-8477 or (631) 854-8352.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-impaired motor vehicle crashes cost more than an estimated $37 billion annually.
