Bohemia, New York — June 14, 2012
Police say a female motorist crashed Thursday in the Bohemia area, injuring her son.
According to officers with the Suffolk County Police Department, 22-year-old Central Islip resident Veronica Austin was behind the wheel of a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer sport-utility vehicle as it traveled west on New York State Route 27 (Sunrise Highway North Service Road). As she approached Pond Road, around 11:10 p.m., Ms. Austin apparently lost control.
Investigators say the SUV veered off the roadway and smashed into a stand of trees. Paramedics transported her son, 5, to East Patchogue’s Brookhaven Hospital Medical Center for treatment.
Officers at the scene detected impairment on the part of Ms. Austin. She is under suspicion of driving while intoxicated with a child under 15, possessing marijuana and endangering the welfare of a child.
Witnesses are asked to call (631) 854-8552 with any additional information. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 10,000 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2010—one every 51 minutes.
