Preble, New York - April 27, 2012

A truck carrying heavy equipment struck a bridge over northbound Interstate 81 on Friday, closing both northbound lanes for almost 24 hours according to the New York State Police. It is not known if any injuries happened in the accident between exits 12 and 13.

The heavy equipment on the back of a flatbed truck struck a highway overpass, causing the bridge to be inspected for damage.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
