Police say a female motorist is dead after a collision in Las Cruces.

According to the Las Cruces Police Department, 22-year-old Tammy Reyna was operating a Chevrolet Cavalier in the city at an unknown hour. Investigators say 18-year-old Eddie Ray Sanchez then approached in a Ford F-150 pickup truck and hit Ms. Reyna’s Cavalier at an estimated 75 miles per hour near the corner of Mulberry Avenue and Solano Drive.

Paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced Ms. Reyna dead.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.

UPDATE: In 2006, Mr. Sanchez was convicted of vehicular homicide and sentenced to three years in prison.
