Rowe, New Mexico – January 14, 2011

Police say a teenager was struck by a train and killed while running along a set of railroad tracks while listening to a portable music player.

The New Mexico State Police reports that Amanda Byrne, 18, of Rowe, was hit by the Amtrak train shortly before 2 p.m. The engineer told police that he attempted to use the horn to signal Ms. Byrne, but was unsuccessful.

Ms. Byrne, an honor roll student at Pecos High School and member of the cross-country track team, apparently did not hear the horn. A headband also covered her ears.

The train was carrying 125 passengers and was traveling between Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California. A police investigation delayed the voyage for roughly 30 minutes.

Friends and family have created a Facebook memorial page in Ms. Byrne’s honor.
