Pemberton Township, New Jersey — November 6, 2011

Police say an off-duty police officer was killed in a crash in Pemberton Township early Sunday morning.

According to reports, 28-year-old Shawn Kitson, an officer with the Pemberton Township Police Department, was operating a vehicle around 6:15 a.m. For unknown reasons, investigators say, he crashed  near the corner of Four Mile Road and County Road 530 (Pemberton Browns Mills Road), near Buttonwood Hospital Burlington County.

Paramedics transported Mr. Kitson to Lourdes Hospital for treatment. Doctors there pronounced him dead.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and it remains unclear whether anyone else was injured.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
