East Brunswick, New Jersey — October 7, 2011

Multiple injuries were reported Friday morning when a three-vehicle crash touched off a truck fire on the New Jersey Turnpike near East Brunswick.

Troopers with the New Jersey State Police say a semi jack-knifed along Interstate 95 (The New Jersey Turnpike) around 5:30 a.m. Investigators say the semi struck a fuel tanker, igniting the fire.

At some point, a United Parcel Service (UPS) truck also became involved. Several travelers involved in the crash were treated for unspecified injuries.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
