Gardnerville, Nevada — November 6, 2011
Police say Gardnerville woman was injured in a crash on Nevada State Route 208 on Sunday evening.
Troopers with the Nevada Highway Patrol report that 51-year-old Reiko Hervin was operating a silver Scion eastbound along Nevada State Route 208 around 6:35 p.m. Investigators say a trailer became detatched from a Dodge pickup truck traveling in front of Ms. Hervin.
She was unable to avoid a collision and struck the trailer – which was hauling a jeep — near Jack Wright Summit. Paramedics transported Ms. Hervin to Renown Regional Medical Center for treatment of broken bones and other injuries.
Officers on scene detected the presence of alcohol on the truck’s driver, 34-year-old Jon Eugene McElhaney of Gardnerville. He is being held on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Ms. Hervin is well-known for her artwork.
According to The Nevada Department of Transportation, 62,225 crashes occurred in 2006, resulting 31,106 injuries and 432 deaths.
UPDATE: Prosecutors have charged Mr. McElhaney with drunk driving causing substantial bodily harm. He was released on $15,637 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on November 30.
UPDATE: Ms. Hervin died on Wednesday, November 30, according to medical examiners.
