Morgan County, Missouri – July 24, 2011

A head-on collision Sunday afternoon left two women with serious injuries.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports, 42-year-old Cole Camp resident Stacy A. Markes traveled west on West 4th Street in a 1992 Oldsmobile. Less than a mile west of Missouri Route 135 Ms. Markes strayed over the center line into eastbound traffic where about 1:45 p.m. she collided with a 2010 Lincoln driven by 76-year-old Versailles resident Viva A. Stokes.

Ms. Stokes and Ms. Markes suffered serious injuries. Ms. Stokes was taken to Capital Region Hospital. Ms. Markes was airlifted to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration‘s National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study found that driver error was the primary cause of 90 percent of major traffic crashes.
