Dent County, Missouri – June 26, 2011

Three passengers were injured Sunday afternoon in a head-on collision.

Keith V. Smith, 24, of Salem drovea 1996 Ford Thunderbird North on County Road 620 in the southbound lane on a curve, when crashed head-on with a 1995 Mercury Cougar about 12:30 p.m., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The Mercury was driven by Christopher S. Wheeler, 18, of Salem.

Michelle L. Smith, 25, of Salem was a passenger in Mr. Smith’s vehicle and suffered minor injuries. She was treated at the scene.

Kurtis W. Hartwood, 18, of Salem was a passenger in Mr. Wheeler’s vehicle and also suffered minor injuries. He sought treatment on his own.

Hailey M. Hunter, 15, of Salem was also in Mr. Wheeler’s vehicle in the crash. She was taken to Salem Memorial District Hospital for the treatment of moderate injuries she suffered.

Both drivers were uninjured in the crash.

The Mercury was totaled, and the Ford incurred moderate damages. Both were towed from the scene.

The exact location of this accident has not been released.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, drivers under 21 were involved in 9,691 personal injury accidents in 2009. A total of 14,904 people were injured in those crashes.
