A boy and his family were walking into the Minneapolis – St. Paul International Airport Friday evening when the boy was hit by a car causing serious injuries.

According to the Minneapolis – St. Paul International Airport, 6-year-old Zachary Drew was walking with his mother, Vanessa Drew, and his three siblings to meet Zachary’s father Richard Drew on his return from an 11-month tour in Iraq. As the family was walking from the parking lot to the terminal Zachary was hit by a car driven by a 61-year-old St. Paul man. The car dragged Zachary about 15 feet and did not stop until it crashed into a wall.

Zachary was taken to Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul for medical attention to serious injuries including a broken leg and nose. Zachary lost most of his teeth in the crash and underwent reconstructive surgery for his jaw.

The driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

A science experiment went wrong Thursday morning resulting in four ninth-graders being burned.

According to the Osseo School District, ninth-grade students were conducting a science experiment at Maple Grove Junior High School when papers and a flammable gas caught fire. The fire started about 9:45 a.m. and caught four of the 30 students. Students were wrapped in a fire coat to put out the fire.

The four burned students were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for medical attention to mild to severe burns. Three students were released, but the fourth student remained at the hospital Thursday.

According the U.S. Department of Education, records of lab experiment mishaps are not recorded due to the rarity of their occurrence.

Police say an elderly woman died Thursday in a rollover crash in Chippewa County.

Deputies with the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, 70-year-old Hacker Heights resident Harriet Payne was operating a 2011 Buick Enclave sport-utility vehicle around 8:05 a.m. For unknown reasons, Ms. Payne veered off Chippewa County Road 4 and struck a bridge north of Highway 40.

Investigators say the SUV flipped and ignited, setting the bridge on fire, as well. Paramedics pronounced Ms. Payne dead on scene.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.

Police say a police officers truck another vehicle near Tower on Sunday, then fled the scene.

Investigators say 46-year-old Esko resident Scott Robert Beckman had left Fortune Bay Resort Casinoafter attending a Ted Nugent concert and was traveling on Lake Vermillion Reservation Road around 9:55 p.m. He was rear-ended by a second vehicle near County Road 77.

A passenger in the second vehicle sustained a sprained ankle and was taken to a hospital in Hibbing. When interviewed by police, Mr. Beckman gave inconsistent statements.

Mr. Beckman is an officer with the Cloquet Police Department.

Mr. Beckman has been charged with failing to give immediate notice of an accident, hit and run and providing false information to police. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 9.

According to the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driver error is responsible for more than 90 percent of serious traffic accidents.

A mother driving a Chevrolet Suburban was running late and created a chain reaction accident that involved a White Bear Lake school bus on Tuesday, police say.

The crash occurred before school in White Bear Lake at the intersection of Eighth Street and Division Avenue in White Bear Lake, White Bear Lake Police Chief Lynne Bankes reports.

The woman behind the wheel of the Suburban ran through a stop sign and struck the school bus that was driving north on Division Avenue. No students were aboard the bus and family members inside the Suburban sustained minor injuries.

A 52-year-old man was killed when his car collided with a semi Orono on Friday.

Police say that the accident occurred about 11:20 p.m. on County Road 6, west of Highway 12. Officers report that the semi went left of center, struck the car and then careened off the road striking a tree 150 feet off the highway.

Though the driver of the car was killed, the 56-year-old semi driver was not injured. Police are uncertain what caused the semi to cross the center line, but they do not suspect that alcohol was a factor.

Names of the drivers involved in the accident have not been released. The Orono Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol are investigating.

Seven people were injured Sunday in an accident on Highway 169 near Jordan in Scott County, according to the Minnesota Highway Patrol.

A Ford Explorer and Lexus were the vehicles involved, and both were destroyed. The Highway Patrol reports that one car was driving northbound on Highway 169 when the other vehicle pulled out from the side of the highway and the collision ensued.

Maplewood resident Daniel Bravo, 47, was transported to an area hospital and was in critical condition. Two teens, a 5-year-old boy and another passenger who were inside Mr. Bravo’s car were injured.

In the other vehicle, the driver, who is a 77-year-old New Prague woman, and an 88-year-old female passenger, suffered injuries.

Specific details about the accident are still unknown and a full investigation is currently taking place.

Homes were evacuated in Grant Friday after a driver struck a large gas pipeline shortly before midnight, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver of the vehicle, who suffered minor injuries, crossed a rural road and then collided with the gas pipeline, the sheriff’s department reported. The accident initiated a massive fire that was visible for more than a mile, sheriff’s deputy Mike Benson says.

Due to the leaking gas, Mahtomedi fire crews walked from door to door evacuating homes within a mile radius of the crash. The evacuation was not mandatory, the sheriff’s department says, but some of the residents chose to spend the night away from their homes.

Xcel Energy and Comcast crews remained on the scene around dawn to repair the damage.

A 78-year-old Eagan woman was killed when her car rear-ended a school bus carrying 19 children in Apple Valley on Monday, according to police. No injuries were reported on the bus, which had 18 students on board, plus the driver.

Around 3:20 p.m., the bus was traveling westbound on McAndrews Road and had stopped to turn left onto Dover Drive when Gloria Deane Carlson’s Ford Contour collided with its right-rear corner, police report.

Bob Gauer, who was driving the bus, has been behind the wheel for the school district for five years. After the accident, he was transported to a health care facility for drug and alcohol testing, which is standard practice, according to a school district representative. Gauer was not given a citation by police.

Following the accident, another bus was sent to pick up the children, who attend Scott Highlands Middle School in Apple Valley, Faithful Shepherd Catholic School in Eagan and St. Joseph School in Rosemount.
