A woman was killed in a snowmobile accident in the eastern Upper Peninsula on Saturday.

Terri Tazwell-Klee, 48, of Deckerville was snowmobiling in rural Chippewa County approximately 25 miles northwest of St. Ignace when she lost control on a curve. The Chippewa County Sheriff Office stated that she then hit a tree.

She was taken to War Memorial Hospital in Sault St. Marie, where she died of her injuries. It is not known if there were any other injuries.

Nearly 213,000 people were treated each year in emergency departments for outdoor recreational injuries from 2004 to 2005, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those injured, about 51 percent were between the ages of 10 and 24.

Officials say two motorists were hospitalized after a semi collision in Monroe Friday morning.

According to Michigan State Police, 31-year-old Danielle Romanoski of Monroe was traveling eastbound on Newport Road around 8:10 a.m. when she struck a semi that was attempting to turn left from the Marathon gasoline station parking lot onto the roadway.

Ms. Romanoski and her unidentified juvenile passenger were hospitalized with serious injuries. The semi driver, 52-year-old Larry Martin of Newport, was not hurt.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010.

A man from Elkhart, Indiana was killed Saturday afternoon in a plane crash north of Niles.

The Michigan State Police report 50-year-old Christopher McKenna died when the small plane he was piloting went down less than two miles west of the Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport around 4:45 p.m. According to the report, Mr. McKenna was flying alongside another plane to test equipment, but the cause of the crash is unclear.

No one else was inside the plane.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Federal Aviation Administration reports that 268 fatal general aviation crashes occurred in the United States in 2010, resulting in 457 deaths. In 2001, 325 fatal crashes were reported, leaving 562 people dead. The rate of fatal general aviation accidents per 100,000 flight hours has fallen from 1.28 in 2001 to 1.14 in 2010. General aviation pilots logged just 22 million flight hours in 2008, compared to 29 million in 1999.

A Niles man was injured Saturday morning in a one-vehicle crash in Milton Township.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports the accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. when 22-year-old Stefan Blakemore somehow lost control of an eastbound vehicle on Bell Road. The vehicle reportedly then left the roadway and overturned multiple times near Ironwood Street.

Following the accident, Mr. Blakemore was transported with unspecified injuries to a hospital in South Bend. The report says he was not wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 80 percent of all rollovers involve no other vehicle besides the one that rolls over.

An elderly man was killed Friday night in a one-vehicle crash in Watervliet, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department reports.

Deputies say Benton Harbor resident Robert McCoy, 87, died after crashing with 67-year-old Watervliet resident Joan Muske at an Interstate 94 on-ramp around 7:37 p.m. Although the crash remains under investigation, officials believe Ms. Muske rear-ended Mr. McCoy’s vehicle, causing both to overturn on or near the ramp.

Mr. McCoy died after being transported to a hospital, the report says, and Ms. Muske and two of her passengers also were hospitalized. Their conditions were not released.

A woman was seriously injured Monday night when she was struck by a vehicle on U.S. Route 12.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports the accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when Franklin Strawser, 68, struck 42-year-old pedestrian Lori Wilkes with his vehicle. The report says Ms. Wilkes was walking on U.S. 12 when the accident occurred and impairment is not believed to have been a factor. However, no additional details are available at this time.

Ms. Wilkes was transported to a hospital in serious condition, and the accident remains under investigation.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that a pedestrian dies in a U.S. traffic accident every 110 minutes and one is injured every nine minutes.

Two passengers were killed Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle crash in Sturgis.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department reports the accident occurred around 6:40 a.m. when 30-year-old Kirk Wayne Miller of Keystone, Indiana somehow lost control of a westbound vehicle on Fawn River Road, by Crooked Creek Road. The report says the vehicle left the roadway and overturned, and two unidentified passengers died at the scene.

Another passenger, also unidentified, was flown to Bronson Hospital. Seven people were riding in the vehicle, but it is unclear if anyone else was injured. The crash remains under investigation.

A local man was killed Thursday in a single-vehicle crash near Edwardsburg.

The Edwardsburg Police Department reports 29-year-old Edwardsburg resident Caleb Marcin died after taking a vehicle off the roadway and crashing into a tree in the area of May Street and Conrad Road. Additional details were not immediately available, but the report says alcohol is believed to be a factor.

The crash remains under investigation.

A woman was killed and her husband was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in a crash involving a deer near Frankenmuth.

The Michigan State Police report the accident occurred in Birch Run Township on Dixie Highway when one vehicle struck a deer and caused the animal to strike the windshield of another vehicle.

A woman in the second vehicle, Bridgeport resident Amanda Gibbs, 34, was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband of the same age and residence, Phillip Gibbs, was reportedly transported in critical condition to Henry Ford Hospital.

The name and condition of the driver of the other vehicle were not provided.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates there were 2.4 million vehicle-deer collisions on U.S. roads from July 2007 to July 2009.

A man from Sodus Township was killed Thursday night in an all-terrain vehicle accident.

Few details are available at this time, but a report from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says 69-year-old Elmer Froehlich was killed when he was pinned underneath the overturned vehicle in a driveway at an unspecified location.

According to the report, Mr. Froehlich was found by his brother, August Froehlich, after Elmer Froehlich had been hunting. It is unclear what caused the accident.

According to the ATV Safety Institute, ATV-related accidents caused 317 deaths and approximately 115,000 emergency room treatments for injuries in 2010. An estimated 28,300 (25 percent) of these were children younger than 16 years of age.

Two children were among three people killed Tuesday night in a head-on crash in Geneva Township.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department reports the accident occurred when a pickup truck crashed into the front of an oncoming car on Van Buren County Road 338. A third vehicle also became involved in the accident, but additional details were not immediately available.

Three people in the car – driver Brittney King, 24, Bangor, and passengers Kandice Berryhill, 2, and Cassadi Berryhill, 4, both of South Haven – reportedly died in the accident. A fourth occupant in the vehicle, Justin Berryhill, 24, was injured and transported to an area hospital, the report says.

The report says the male driver of the pickup, an Alabama man whose name was not released, told deputies he had consumed alcohol prior to the accident. He also was hospitalized for treatment of various injuries.

No one in the third vehicle was listed as injured in the report.

A man was killed Thursday afternoon when he became trapped in a well at a Benton Township golf course.

According to reports, the accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the Point O’ Woods Golf Course at 1516 Roslyn Road in Benton Harbor. Around that time, a crew was working to install a large underground water tank, and the man reportedly fell into the well when the work caused the ground beneath him to shift.

Officials identified the man as Jenison resident Dean VerBurg and said he was an employee of Total Fire Protection.

According to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, 4,690 workers were killed on the job in 2010 — more than 90 a week or nearly 13 deaths every day.

Four people, including a child, were injured Monday night when a GMC Yukon crashed into a tree east of Bridgman.

According to reports, the accident occurred in Lake Charter Township around 5:30 p.m. when a 16-year-old took the sport-utility vehicle off Jericho Road, near Shawnee Road. It is unclear what caused the driver to lose control.

All four of the vehicle’s occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle, the reports say. While their identities were not released, the driver is reportedly a student at New Buffalo High School. One passenger, 18, attends Bridgman High School and another, 7, attends New Buffalo Elementary School. The fourth occupant is 19 years old, but no additional information was provided.

All of the occupants were transported to a St. Joseph area hospital, and two of them were later transferred to a hospital in Kalamazoo. The severity of their respective injuries was not reported.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, trees are the most common fixed object struck. Fifty percent of deaths in fixed object crashes in 2010 involved a vehicle striking a tree. Utility poles and traffic barriers were the next most common objects struck, accounting for 14 and 8 percent of deaths, respectively.

Few details are available at this time regarding an early morning crash that occurred Sunday near Dowagiac.

UPDATE: Authorities now say the wreck was caused by a a 17-year-old male driver becoming distracted and losing control of a vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and strike a tree. No other vehicles were involved. In addition to the driver, four other teenagers inside the vehicle also were injured and hospitalized. Their names and conditions were not released. Alcohol was not a contributing factor, officials say.

Authorities say a female traveler was injured during a collision in the Hastings area.

According to reports, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled along Michigan State Route 43 (Michigan State Route 37/West State Street). As the vehicle passed between Cook Street and Industrial Park Drive, at an unknown hour, the driver attempted to turn into the Burger King restaurant, located at 1310 West State Street.

The vehicle was reportedly hit by a Dodge Ram pickup truck. An occupant of the car, Anna Welch, sustained a pelvis fracture bladder rupture, kidney tear, spleen tear and liver tear.

It is unclear whether anyone else was injured. The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found driver error was the primary cause in 90 percent of major traffic crashes.

L. Brooks Patterson, 74, was injured Friday in an accident at 4:02 p.m. on Opdyke Road and Walton Boulevard. The Auburn Hills Police Department stated that Mr. Patterson was riding in a Chrysler 300 when he collided with a light-blue Volkswagen Passat that was turning left onto Opdyke.

Mr. Patterson was hospitalized with several broken bones and a scalp laceration at McLaren Health Center. Police did not release the name of the driver of the Chrysler 300 or the two passengers in the Passat. All three of those men suffered serious injuries.

Ryan Roberts, 22, was killed Thursday evening in an accident at approximately 11:30 p.m. according to the Fraser Police Department. Mr. Roberts was riding as a passenger with his twin brother, Drew, on Hayes Road and were stopped at 15-mile Road when they were rear-ended by a 67-year old Detroit man.

The second driver was not identified, but officials believe he may have suffered a medical condition which caused the accident. Both drivers were hospitalized as a result of the crash.

An accident just after 3 a.m. at the intersection of Elizabeth Lake Road and Michigan State Route 59 killed an unidentified 23-year old woman from White Lake Township. The woman was driving a Chevrolet Aveo on Highland Road when she rear-ended a delivery truck.

The driver of the delivery truck was not injured. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, but officials do not believe that alcohol was available according to the Waterford Township Police Department.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 68 percent of motor vehicle fatalities in 2010 were passenger vehicle occupants, 13 percent were pedestrians, 13 percent were motorcyclists, 2 percent were bicyclists, and 1 percent were occupants of large trucks.

An accident on Canton Center Road at 2:10 a.m. killed two teenage women according the Canton Department of Public Safety. A Chevrolet Monte Carlo that was eastbound on Michigan Avenue struck the Chevrolet Cavalier the women were in, which was driven by a 24-year old male.

No names were released in this accident, but the driver of the Monte Carlo was identified as a 21-year old male. The deceased were aged 18 and 19. Both drivers suffered minor injuries in the crash.

An unidentified 25-year old woman was struck and killed by a train Wednesday morning while she was walking along a set of tracks near Ninth Street and Maple Street. The Wyandotte Police Department believes that the woman was suicidal, as she was on the phone with her boyfriend talking about killing herself at the time of the accident.

The train’s engineer signaled the horn several times, but he stated that the woman clearly had no intention of leaving the tracks. A suicide note was found near the scene.

The Warren Township Police Department was called to the scene of a collision between a SMART bus,a semi, and a passenger car on Friday. A total of three people suffered injuries in a silver sedan that was hit and spun around by the bus.

The accident happened on eastbound 14 Mile Road near Ryan Road. The car was in the right hand lane behind the bus and struck the semi when it moved to the left lane in order to pass the bus. None of the bus passengers suffered serious injuries

The American Bus Association reports that more than half of tour bus fatalities from 1999 to 2009 involved carriers operating against the law or with a history of safety violations.

Kevin Bushon, 34, was boating Saturday evening approximately two miles east of Beacon’s Cove Marina at 10:40 when he was involved in a boat crash that injured two people. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office stated that a 47-year old Roseville man was severely injured, while his wife also suffered injuries.

Mr. Bushon was charged with operating while intoxicated. Three passengers on his boat were uninjured. Sheriff’s officials did not release the name of the two injured persons.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hypothermia occurs when the body’s core temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit and is the cause of around 600 deaths per year in the United States.

Two officers with the Detroit Police Department were injured Tuesday evening at the intersection of Grand Boulevard and the Lodge Freeway. A civilian was also injured in the accident, but no names were released by officials.

The severity of the injuries in this accident was not released. Officials did not state a cause for this crash. Officials did not identify the officers that were hurt, but several other police officers were reported to be on scene.

A 19-year old man was killed in Groveland Township on Tuesday when his 2006 Hyundai was eastbound on Holly Road and rolled over. The driver was an unidentified 19-year old and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 1 a.m.

A 41-year old passenger was listed in serious condition as a result of injuries in the accident. The passenger had to be extracted from the vehicle according to the Michigan State Police.

A wrong-way collision on Interstate 696 happened at approximately 6 a.m. according to the Michigan State Police. A 24-year old Shelby Township man was eastbound in the westbound lanes in a 2000 Ford Taurus when he hit a 2003 Ford Taurus driven by a 52-year old woman.

Both drivers had to be extracted from their vehicles before being taken to a hospital in critical condition.The accident happened near Dequindre Road on I-696. No one else was believed to be injured in the accident.

A frustrated driver rammed his Chevrolet Monte Carlo into the front entrance of the General motors headquarters on Monday at approximately 2 p.m. The unidentified driver was attempting to turn around in the circular driveway in front of the building when he lightly tapped the building, cracking the glass.

As the unidentified 26-year old waited for the Detroit Police Department to arrive he became agitated and rammed the revolving doors in front. He was arrested, and it is not known if there were any injuries.

The Roscommon County Sheriff Office confirmed that a three-year old girl has died and a 39-year old man is missing after a boating accident. The girl allegedly drowned when a wave hit a pontoon boat she was on and she fell overboard. The man went missing when he dove in to save her.

The girl was found Monday evening and was pronounced dead, while the man has not yet been found. Police say that several adults attempted to save the girl.

According to the Boating Safety Resource Center, open motorboats were the No. 1 vessel type for boating casualties with 325 total deaths and 1969 total casualties in 2010.

Two passengers of a small plane that crashed in a field were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries on Sunday. The accident happened near William “Tiny” Zehnder Field shortly after takeoff and four people in the plane survived according to the Frankenmuth Fire Department.

No names were given in this accident, but the pilot was identified as a 25-year old Livonia resident. A 26-year old Royal Oak woman and Two Livonia men, age 56 and 57, were also on board.

According to a report, 786 people were killed in 23 incidents in 2010, up from 685 deaths in 18 fatal crashes in 2009. The organization says serious accident occur once every 1.6 million flights.

Thomas Hammershmitt, 54, was ticketed for careless driving on Tuesday when he crossed the center line on north Lincoln Road and rear-ended a northbound car. His van then hit a light pole before crashing through the drive through window of a Hardees restaurant.

Tiffany Tryan, 23, was treated for minor injuries suffered as an employee in the store. Mr. Hammershmitt was also taken to the hospital for observation and later release according to the Escanaba Police Department.

William Gholston and Lawrence Thomas, two football players at Michigan State University, were slightly injured on Wednesday in a rollover crash on Interstate 96 near Spencer Road.

The Michigan State Police stated that the accident occurred at 3:40 p.m. when another vehicle attempted to change lanes in front of another driver who was driving a four-door Hyundai sedan. That driver lost control of her vehicle, colliding with Mr. Gholston’s Chevrolet SUV.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 85 percent of adults use safety belts, compared to only 81 percent of travelers in 2002. Overall, seat belt use has risen dramatically since 1982 when the usage rate was only 11 percent.
