An unidentified Detroit woman was seriously injured on Sunday morning after the car she was riding in struck a utility pole. No names were given in the accident, but Redford Township Police say that the 22-year old driver lost control, possibly due to weather, and hit a pole on Telegraph Road near Plymouth Road.

A 21-year old female passenger was injured and is in critical condition according to authorities. The driver did not suffer any injuries and another 18-year old passenger had minor injuries.

According to the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driver error is responsible for more than 90 percent of serious traffic accidents.

Russell Eugene Barker, 50, was killed in a snowmobile accident Tuesday afternoon in Burt Township, Alger County. The accident occurred approximately five miles west of Grand Marais at around 12:15 in the afternoon.

Mr. Barker was driving his snowmobile when it left a trail and hit a tree. The Alger County Sheriff’s Department is continuing the investigation of this crash.

According to the Current Orthopaedic Practice Research Journal, each year snowmobile accidents produce approximately 200 deaths and 14,000 injuries. Excess speed, alcohol, driver inexperience, and poor judgment are the leading causes of accidents. Injuries incurred in children and adults often are extremity fractures, but can involve any organ system. Similar to motor vehicle accidents, multisystem trauma occurs frequently with head injury the leading cause of death.

David Zimmer, 68, was treated for minor injuries and 10 other people were injured when the truck Mr. Zimmer was driving was hit by an Amtrak train. Mr. Zimmer was ticketed for trying to cross railroad tracks without enough clearance.

There were 10 passengers injured on the Amtrak train, which caused service delays between Chicago and Detroit until Thursday. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department was investigating the crash. The names of those injured on the train were not released.

A Macomb County Sheriff’s deputy is facing possible charges for driving under the influence for an accident that resulted in injuries. The 45-year old sergeant, who was not identified, was off duty and driving his personal vehicle when he failed to make the turn off of 22 Mile Road onto Card Road and went into a ditch Sunday morning.

The driver was traveling with his son and brother. All three were treated for non-life threatening injuries. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the matter because they believe alcohol was allegedly involved.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that roughly 25 percent of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes have a blood-alcohol content of 0.20 or higher.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department reports that a 32-year-old man was killed when a snowmobile accident happened Friday night.

According to reports, the deceased man was David McEntire. He had been snowmobiling as part of a group, and the riders had started their trip in Wisconsin before proceeding into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Authorities say Mr. McEntire was near Lac La Belle when his snowmobile went out of control and left a trail. It collided with a tree, resulting in fatal injuries. It is suspected that he was traveling at least 50 miles per hour when the accident took place.

Medics at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital declared Mr. McEntire dead sometime after the incident. Police are continuing their investigation.

The Detroit Police Department is investigating a fatal accident that happened Sunday night.

No identities have been released at this time, but police indicate that alcohol was a likely factor in the crash that claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy. Also hurt in the incident was an 8-year-old girl. Reports show that both children had been riding in a vehicle driven by their mother, and it was reportedly struck near the crossing of Hoover Street and Pinewood Avenue.

The individual behind the wheel of the other vehicle is suspected of driving under the influence, though no charges have been specified.

Further details—including the identities of those involved—are expected to be released shortly.

The Michigan State Police report that an unidentified person died Thursday morning after an accident took place on Interstate 696.

According to reports, the person somehow entered the course of traffic near 12 Mile Road. Multiple collisions were reported, leaving the pedestrian with fatal injuries. Authorities suspect that the individual may have been engaged in maintenance procedures on a vehicle when struck.

In addition to the fatality, reports show that one of the motorists involved in the incident sustained injuries. Traffic on the interstate was disrupted throughout the morning hours, as crews worked to clear the scene and investigators gathered information.

The Michigan State Police report that a 52-year-old woman died following an incident in Mt. Morris Township.

According to reports, the accident that claimed the life of Deborah Klapp unfolded on West Pierson Road. Police say Ms. Klapp had been traveling east when she struck the back of a vehicle which had halted due to an oncoming ambulance.

Following the rear-end collision, Ms. Klapp reportedly stepped into the roadway and was attempting to move toward the vehicle she had struck. At that time, she was hit by an eastbound traveler, resulting in the injuries that would claim her life.

Authorities are continuing to investigate, and it was unclear if the driver of the vehicle that struck Ms. Klapp remained at the scene.

The Michigan State Police have reported that a fatal accident happened Saturday night on U.S. 2.

According to reports, the incident took place around 8:40 p.m. in Escanaba, where 46-year-old Louise Morrigan-O’Connor had been northbound when her vehicle reportedly went out of control due to unknown factors. Police say Ms. Morrigan-O’Connor entered the oncoming lanes of travel before colliding with a pickup truck.

The uninjured driver of the truck was 48-year-old Michael Narkooli.

Though the investigation is ongoing, authorities currently suspect that hazardous roadway conditions may have contributed in causing the fatal incident.

The Michigan State Police report that a 23-year-old man from Niles died Sunday when a single-vehicle accident occurred along U.S. 12.

According to reports, the deceased driver was Andrew Wuthnow. He was traveling near U.S. 31 when his vehicle reportedly ran off the roadway and struck the cement column of an overpass. It happened at about 5:30 p.m., and an observer reported seeing no apparent attempt to brake before Mr. Wuthnow’s car ran off U.S. 12 and hit the column head-on.

Investigators say that impairment is not considered a possible factor. It is suspected that fatigue may have played a role, though authorities indicate that they remain unsure what led Mr. Wuthnow’s car to veer into the cement column.

The Michigan State Police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating an airplane crash that caused the deaths of two men.

According to reports, one of those killed in the crash was 52-year-old Tom Phillips, who worked as an executive for Amazon.

Mr. Phillips had been en route to his vacation home on Mackinac Island when the plane he rode in apparently went down just off the shore of the island. Officials suspect that foggy conditions may have contributed to the pilot’s failure to land the craft at the Mackinac Island Airport. The individual operating the plane was 29-year-old Joe Pann, who also lost his life in the incident.

The investigation continues.

The Michigan State Police have reported the death of a 47-year-old man following a motor-vehicle collision. Authorities say the fatal incident happened around 11 p.m. Wednesday night and involved a semi.

According to reports, the deceased man was Port Huron resident Terry Richert. He had been traveling on Gratiot Road, and his vehicle was eastbound when it entered the intersection with Wadhams Road.

Though the investigation is ongoing, officials suspect that Mr. Richert disregarded a flashing red light, causing his vehicle to collide with a northbound semi. Mr. Richert’s injuries led to his death on site.

The driver of the semi was not identified in police reports, though reports show that the individual is from Columbiaville. The roadways in the vicinity of the crash remained closed into Thursday morning, as crews worked to clear the area.

Police say a pedestrian died and another was injured when they were struck by a vehicle in Deerfield Township.

According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, 47-year-old Jeffrey Westphal and 33-year-old Lisa Vail were on foot along Center Road at an unknown hour. Investigators say a Ford F-250 pickup truck then approached from the east, striking the pedestrians from behind.

Paramedics transported Ms. Vail to a nearby hospital for treatment. Mr. Westphal died from his injuries.

Rather than stopping at the scene, the operator of the pickup truck fled. Officers later discovered the vehicle dumped to Golf Club Road and Argentine Road.

UPDATE: After identifying the suspect as a female from Fowlerville, 27, police now say the woman made a false police report in an attempt to protect her boyfriend. Neither of their names have been released.

Police say a crash in Muskegon on Friday morning left one person dead and two others seriously injured.

According to the Muskegon Police Department, Lateashia Evans-Selmon, 35, was driving northbound along Hoyt Street in a minivan around 8:55 a.m. Investigators believe Ms. Evans-Selmon failed to heed a red light at the corner with Laketon Avenue and crossed into the path of a semi.

The unidentified trucker was unable to avoid a collision and struck the minivan. The force of the impact threw 62-year-old Rosemary Evans, 42-year-old Tawana Morris and 2-year-old Jmiah Evans-Selmon from the wreckage.

Paramedics pronounced Ms. Evans dead on scene. Meanwhile, Ms. Morris and Jmiah were taken to Grand Rapids-area hospital for treatment.

Police say a man was killed and his twin brother injured in a crash in Macomb County early Friday morning.

Deputies with the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department report that 21-year-old Berville resident Jacob Dubaree was driving a 1989 Ford Ranger pickup truck south along North Avenue around 5:25 a.m. Friday. As Mr. Dubaree passed between 23 Mile Road and 24 Mile Road, when he veered into the northbound lane.

Investigators say the pickup truck collided with a 2003 Mazda minivan. A motorist traveling behind the minivan in a 1993 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck was unable to stop in time and struck the minivan from behind.

Mr. Dubaree died of injuries he suffered in the crash. His twin brother, Joshua Dubaree of Washington Township, was critically injured and taken to Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center.

A Huron Township man, 53, and a woman from Mount Clemens, 42, also sustained injury.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.

Police say a woman died Tuesday in Berlin Township after she was thrown from a motorcycle and was run over.

Troopers with the Michigan State Police say Woodland resident Jeffrey Grooters was operating his motorcycle south on Michigan Highway 66 on Tuesday evening. As Mr. Grooters approached Goodemoot Road, a deer wandered onto the roadway and into his path.

Mr. Grooters could not avoid a collision and struck the deer, throwing Mr. Grooters and his wife, 43-year-old Paula Grooters, from the wreckage. A van operated by a a Bellevue man, 78, then approached the scene and ran over Mrs. Grooters.

She died as a result of her injuries. Paramedics airlifted Mr. Grooters to Spectrum Health Hospital.

The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that driver error was the primary cause in 90 percent of major traffic crashes.

Police say a teen was killed in a collision in Bangor Township on Sunday.

Officers from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department report that a white Jeep Liberty sport-utility vehicle was traveling near the intersection of 68th Street and 34th Avenue during the morning hours when it crashed. The identity of the driver is unknown, but two women, ages 18 and 19, and a man, 27, were found on scene.

Paramedics declared the elder woman dead on scene. Her body was found outside of the vehicle, although it is unclear whether she was ejected or intentionally removed.

Although the man declined medical attention, the second woman went to South Haven Community Hospital for treatment.

Investigators are exploring the possibility that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Police say a pro football player escaped injury in a crash on Belle Isle near Detroit early Friday.

The Detroit Police Department reports that NFL wide receiver Braylon Edwards was behind the wheel of a 2011 Audi, shortly after 3:30 a.m., when he veered off the roadway and collided with a pylon. Investigating officers say Mr. Edwards and an unidentified man escaped without injury.

Police issued no citations and report that neither alcohol nor drugs are considered to be a factor. Belle Isle is an island park located in the Detroit River, between the city and the Canadian shore. The exact location of the crash has not been released.

Mr. Edwards played for the New York Jets during the 2010-2011 season, during which he caught 53 receptions, gaining 904 yards and scoring seven touchdowns. He is now a free agent. 

Mr. Edwards attended the University of Michigan.

Police in Pittsfield Township are looking into a vehicle versus pedestrian crash that injured an unidentified township resident Saturday. They report that the man, 19, was walking on Michigan Avenue about 3:30 a.m.

Reports show that he was walking west when a vehicle hit him near Munger Road and critically injured him, authorities confirmed. The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the incident, police said–nor was an additional pedestrian who was walking with the 19-year-old.

The victim was hospitalized, but the facility to where he was taken was not named. Investigators continue to look for answers in the incident, police report.

A Corunna man is accused of running a red light and crashing at the State Street and M-21 intersection Friday. The incident sent a Bancroft woman and her passenger to Flint’s Hurley Medical Center, Michigan State Police report.

It happened about 1:30 p.m. when Doug Thurston reportedly disregarded a red traffic signal while behind the wheel of a pickup truck. This caused his vehicle to collide with a Chevrolet Cavalier which was being operated by Debra Rutherford and one passenger.

The Michigan State Police report that Mr. Thurston suffered only minor injuries, and they did not indicate that he was hospitalized. Ms. Rutherford needed to be mechanically extricated from the Cavalier, and she and her passenger were taken to the hospital to be treated.

Authorities in Huron Township confirmed the death of a Huron Township girl–Shyan Frye, 13–who was killed by a train while on her bicycle Friday.

Authorities say Shyan was hit by a locomotive at the railroad crossing between West Road and King Road on Inkster Road. It happened shortly after she had sent a text message to a friend at a trailer park where she was headed.

Investigators said they are still looking into the incident, but that the train engineer indicated that the 13-year-old did not appear to be paying attention to what she was doing in the moments before she was fatally hit.

Authorities in Allegan County are trying to piece together a crash which involved a driver headed in the wrong direction and killed a man from Kalamazoo Saturday in Dorr Township.

The wreck occurred in the early-morning hours when a pickup truck was going north in the south-traveling lanes of U.S. Route 131 north of 144th Avenue, reports show.

Witnesses who saw the truck headed in the wrong direction alerted Allegan County deputies via 911, but the truck hit a tractor-trailer in a head-on collision. Following the first impact, a minivan hit the semi as well.

According to the sheriff’s department, the driver of the pickup truck–Kenneth Wrozek, 61–was taken to an unspecified medical facility following the crash, and died there a short time later. Deputies report that the other people involved in the wreck sustained only minor injuries.

A single-vehicle wreck in Battle Creek Saturday afternoon killed a city teenager, police there report.

It happened about 12:30 p.m. when a car driven by Travis Keathley, 17, was headed west on Watkins Road and slammed into a fire hydrant not far from Helmer Road. It then ran into a group of trees, an incident report indicates.

Mr. Keathley was thrown from the interior of the vehicle during the crash. According to police investigating the incident, the speed at which the victim was traveling may have played a role in the wreck. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding vehicles contribute to 93 fatal traffic accidents every day.

A man from Grand Rapids Township was killed when he was electrocuted at a Kroger grocery store in which he was helping with remodeling efforts, police in Harper Woods report.

The 46-six-year-old Jeffrey Summerfield was working in the Detroit store when he touched a live wire around 9 a.m. Monday, police confirmed.
Mr. Summerfield was an electrician, and was apparently part of a team hired to remodel some of the grocery store.

No further details were made available by investigators. It is unclear whether Mr. Summerfield died at the scene or was first transported for treatment.

Michigan State Police in Pinconning Township report that a woman from Bay City–23-year-old Angela Ice–lost her life in a crash involving three vehicles Tuesday.

It happened about 5:30 p.m. as Ms. Ice was northbound on M-13. She reportedly let the 2000 Oldsmobile she was driving go out of her control and into the opposing lane, where it struck a 2011 Buick and a 2007 Jeep.

Ms. Ice was declared deceased at the crash site. An unidentified man, 47, from Akron, Ohio was riding as a passenger in the Jeep and sustained injuries deemed serious. He was taken from the scene to Bay Regional Medical Center, then to Flint’s Hurley Medical Center, reports show.

Officials said there were three other people involved in the wreck, but they were not hurt.

Michigan State Police in St. Clair County report a man from Washington Township–Stephen Matthew Malburg, 22–was killed in a one-vehicle wreck early Friday morning in Berlin Township.

The crash happened shortly before 2 a.m. when the vehicle carrying Mr. Malburg was westbound on Belle River Road. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which left the roadway and hit a number of trees, reports show.

Mr. Malburg was declared deceased at the crash site. The driver reportedly escaped the scene on foot before police arrived, but was located later and hospitalized.

The incident remains under investigation.

A 27-year-old man from Petoskey, Christopher Banks, was hurt when he was riding his motorcycle Wednesday and hit a car, the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office reports.

It happened around 4:15 p.m. as Mr. Banks was headed north on U.S. Route 31 and reportedly swerved to evade a rear-end wreck into some traffic that had stopped ahead of him by Division Road, deputies stated.

The motorcycle went out of Mr. Banks’ control at that point, and he ended up in the opposing lane before colliding head-on with another automobile being operated by 61-year-old James Kitson, deputies confirmed.

No injuries were reported for Mr. Kitson, and reports show that Mr. Banks was hospitalized for treatment of unspecified injuries.

Two pit bull terriers bit a Morley woman a number of times as she was running Thursday. Reports state that she had been training for the Fifth-Third River Bank Run.

Linda Adamthwaite, 38, was training near Marble Road on Yankee Road about 9:15 a.m. when the two dogs attacked her after leaving the boundaries of where they are kept, reports show.

Her attempts to ignore the dogs were apparently in vain, she told investigators. The dogs bit her a number of times. Authorities said a neighbor heard Ms. Adamthwaite’s cries for help and came to her aid, adding that the dogs’ owners were out of town.

Ms. Adamthwaite was taken to Kelsey Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and then released. The pit bulls are being quarantined and the owners may be charged criminally, officials said.

Deputies in Ottawa County say an 18-year-old Holland Township man was hurt when the vehicle he was driving went out of his control and overturned multiple times late Saturday night.

It happened on 112th Street when Alex Phik lost control of the Honda Civic he was driving north and crossed into the opposing lane, reports show.

Mr. Phik reportedly took evasive action to avoid crashing into an oncoming vehicle, and his car wound up on the gravel on the side of the road before flipping a number of times. A rescue crew transported Mr. Phik to Holland Hospital to be treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, officials confirmed.

A passenger in a car that flipped into a water-filled ditch was rescued by a passerby Wednesday. It happened around midnight while the driver was attempting to avoid striking a deer in the roadway, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Allendale resident Charles Denman, 24, reportedly swerved to miss the deer on a stretch of Lake Michigan Drive by 136th Avenue in Robinson Township. He then lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, coming to rest in a ditch containing water, deputies report.

Mr. Denman extricated himself from the vehicle, but his passenger–24-year-old Joel Apol–was trapped inside the vehicle, which was part-way under water, reports show. Mr. Denman was able to get the attention of passerby Bryan Celano, 20, who jumped under water and pulled Mr. Apol to safety, reports show.

Both men in the car suffered minor injuries.
