An ice fishing trip turned deadly for a man from Escanaba Saturday. On his way off of the ice, his four-wheeled, all-terrain vehicle rolled onto him after it went out of control near a boat dock, the Delta County Sheriff’s Office reports.
Nicholas Kolich, 56, a resident of 1425 3rd Avenue North in Escanaba, was operating a Polaris 500 ATV en route back to the North Shore Boat Launch on Little Bay de Noc. While transitioning from the ice to the boat launch, the ATV yawed, slid, and made contact with pavement, causing it to overturn and come to rest on top of Mr. Kolich, an incident report shows.
No one was at the scene of the wreck when it happened, but someone found Mr. Kolich beneath the four-wheeler around 6 p.m., and called public safety officials. Mr. Kolich was later pronounced dead at OSF St. Francis Hospital, deputies stated.
