A motorist was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after crashing and flipping his vehicle near the intersection of Number 9 Road and U.S. Route 1 in Orient Monday night.

According to Maine State Police, 46-year-0ld Micah Bartlett of Orient was traveling eastbound in his 2007 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck around 7:40 p.m. when he lost control for unknown reasons and left the roadway. The impact caused him to flip his vehicle which then struck several trees and caught on fire.

Mr. Bartlett was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital with burns on over 70 percent of his body. No one else was involved.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency reports an estimated 258,500 highway vehicle fires occurred annually in the United States from 2004 to 2006.
